One thing you may not know about me, is that I have Hashimoto’s which is an autoimmune thyroid condition and frankly the biggest symptom of it is fatigue which can often be debilitating. But here’s the kicker: it takes SEVEN YEARS to develop. So I figured I’d take this opportunity to visit my younger self…from 15 years ago. Little did I know back then how my destructive binge drinking ways (which I only ever did on the weekends) and lack of sleep would affect me now. I mean let’s face it, few of us really cared in our 20’s because heck, we were invincible right?
I’ll tell you this about my past self – I was HYPER reactive and I suppose it’s why I can relate to so many women that enter Sexy Lady Balls, my hormone membership program. They’re SPENT, tired and give to everyone else but themselves. It leaves them with no reserves which thus leaves them reacting rather than responding to life. This is when I see not only fatigue set in, but depression and anxiety. Plus the pounds begin to pack on.
It’s why that I wanted to dedicate this post to talking about a supplement that has been a game-changer for me for my energy levels and helping me maintain my weight and that is my Pruvit Ketones. Plus I created a free Ketone 411 Guide that can help you better understand them if you’re still left scratching your head after reading this post. Here is a brief about what you need to know about them and how to use them:
What are Pruvit ketones?
These are called exogenous ketones and after consuming them, it puts the body into ketosis (which is a fat-burning, brain-fuel loving state) within one hour. I always get asked if you have to eat a ketogenic diet while taking these and the answer is no. Unlike a ketogenic diet (which puts your body into ketosis endogenously – meaning you produce ketone bodies internall), exogenous ketones is when you take something external from the body to achieve the same state.
Ketones for weight loss, energy and mental clarity.
The reason why I mention this is because when you go into a ketogenic state, your body switches its fuel source from burning glucose to burning fat. This doesn’t mean I’m giving you an allowance to shovel a Standard American Diet into your pie hole, because nutrition is vital. I don’t advocate the ketogenic diet because I find it incredibly restrictive and I work with a lot of women who already have a troubled relationship with food. So instead, I advocate a high fat, low carb diet (HFLC) which allows for some flexibility. Let’s face it, there are times (especially before my period) where I want a bit of sweet potato and heck, I’m going to have it! The difference is, that vegetables are always the star of my plate, with high quality fats and I eat meat as a condiment.
From an energy perspective, when we go into ketosis and we begin to burn fat which is our prime state of fuel. This is where I begin to feel a burst of energy and mental clarity. Brain fog has been a HUGE issue for me in the past but by adding in ketones on a daily, I feel like I’m sharp as a tack.
How and when to take them and which flavours are my favourite.
This is one of the most popular questions I get. When I wake up in the morning, I take my low dose of desiccated thyroid hormone and I’ll guzzle down 16oz of water with a pinch of sea salt (for my adrenals and to love up on my minerals). I’ll wait an hour (because you have to with thyroid meds) and then I’ll take my ketones (which yes, are caffeinated but not nearly as stimulating on my nervous system like coffee is). Even when I wasn’t on thyroid meds, I still drank 16oz of water with salt to begin with. The reason being is because it’s important to flush the body first thing when it’s been stagnant as you sleep all night. Not to mention, ketones are a diuretic so you need to make sure you’re drinking half your body weight in ounces. And while the product does have sodium (to counteract the diuretic effect), I still recommend adding in high quality sea salt to nourish your adrenals. I do this and recommend this to all my patients because it allows you to efficiently hydrate.
Now you don’t have to take them in the morning or before your workouts. I know a lot of people who take the decaffeinated version later in the day or even before bed (some report even sleeping better!). The timing is up to you.
The flavours I love best are: Keto Max Swiss Cacao (which I use in the recipe below), Keto Max Maui Punch and Keto Max Raspberry Lemonade.
Are they safe if I’ve had my gallbladder removed or have kidney issues?
Obviously because I’m not a medical doctor, I would always suggest that you check with your medical doctor, but I will tell you that unlike producing ketones endogenously, exogenous ketones like the ones from Pruvit do not put strain on your kidneys or gallbladder.
Are there any other reasons why you use them aside from weight loss and energy?
Yes absolutely! In fact I’ve given them to my 78 year old father who HAD early stages of Parkinson’s. After shifting his diet (the man loved his bread and cookies), putting him on a probiotic and his daily dose of ketones, his shaking and lip quivering was gone after three months.
I’ve also used it with patients of mine because ketone bodies help to manage inflammation and I’ll tell you that virtually all hormonal issues are manifestations of systemic inflammation. So if you’ve got PCOS (especially insulin-resistance) then ketones are an absolute non-negotiable because it helps you become more insulin-responsive. It’s helpful for those with adrenal and thyroid issues or those who struggle with fibroids, endometriosis, acne and more. I’ve SEEN how Pruvit ketones have supported women I work with, so I’m a huge fan.
