If you’ve ever been in the health food store shopping for maca, let’s face it, it can be a little confusing. I mean there’s red, black and yellow. There’s capsules, liquid and powder. And let’s not forget that you can choose from purchasing raw or gelatinized. I mean I’ve even caught the people working behind the counter scratching their heads.
So when the fine foxes over at my free and private Sexy Food Therapy Community group asked me multiple times, “Melissa, what’s the difference between all the different kinds of maca available?” I figured I’d answer it in a video.

Maca Benefits & What You Need to Know Before Buying it!
- One of the most common and like the red and black variety, its known for its energizing and libido-boosting propertiies
- In one study with mice, it was shown to have neuroprotective properties and potential anti-depressant effects.
- Studies have shown that red maca may help to reduce inflammation of the prostate gland.
Raw Maca vs. Gelatinized Maca
“Raw Maca or Gelatinized Maca Melissa?? This has been one of the biggest questions I receive. In Peru, where maca is traditionally grown, maca would never be consumed raw because it contains goitrogens that has anti-nutritive benefits and can disrupt thyroid function and cause an upset stomach. Not sexy, right? So in my opinion, if you’re going to consume maca, choose gelatinized, which breaks down the starches and goitrogens.
